When we were advised that store bought bread products was to be avoided, we decided that we needed to try and make our own flour tortillas.  We love burritos and flour tortilla tacos too much to give it up.

Ingredients

  • 650 Grams All Purpose Flour - About 4 cups
  • 1/2 Cup Canola Oil - Can use olive oil as well
  • 1 Cup Water - Plus 1 Tbl (enough water for the dough to form)

Preparation

Step 1:

Mix the flour and 1/2 cup of oil in a bowl. Once mixed, slowly add the water until the dough just comes together. Pour the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and form a disk. Cover with a damp towel for 10 minutes.

Step 2:

Grab a handful of dough and roll it out. Put the tortilla on a cast iron skillet heated to medium-high heat. Cook on one side for 15 seconds and then flip to the other side and cook for another 15 seconds. The tortilla is done when it starts to inflate or the edges start peeling up. (Note: If the dough is too dry, the edges of the tortilla will crack. More water can be added to the dough at any time.)

Step 3:

Repeat with the remaining tortillas.
